James Cook and the Discovery of the Pacific
until 13 Sept
The Austrian Museum of Ethnology is exhibiting one of the largest exhibitions on English explorer James Cook, navigator and cartographer. The National Library of Australia, the Australian Museum, and the State Library of New South Wales have contributed material from their collections to the Exhibition.
In addition to the University of Goettingen and the Austrian Museum for Ethnology, which own the world’s largest collections of ethnographic material from Cook’s voyages, more than 40 other institutions have contributed loans, making the exhibition one of the most specatular
Cook voyage exhibitions of all times.

Niederoesterreichische Kindersommerspiele 2010

The Australian Embassy has been approached by the organisers of the Niederoesterreichische Kindersommerspiele, located at Stift Herzogenburg, north of St Poelten. The organisers are looking for artists, dancers, musicians who would like to participate in this year’s Kindersommerspiele festival.
This year’s theme will be Australia.
The organisers wish to include workshops, if possible inclunding Australian dancers, artists and musicians.
Target group are kids up to 10 years of age.

The Embassy would be grateful if you could circulate their request to anyone who might be interested and suitable to participate. The summer festivals have been quite successful in the past years and have the support of the state government.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) will be performing at Grafenegg castle, in Lower Austria, on Saturday 4th September 2010 at 7:00 pm. This will be the first time the SSO has played in Austria since 1974. Their European tour will also take them to London, Edinbrugh, Lucerne, Wiesbaden, Amsterdam and Prague. Internationally renowned conductor and musician Vladimir Ashkenazy will conduct the concert. Piano virtuoso Hélène Grimaud will be the soloist.
The concert will be held as part of the annual Grafenegg Festival. We have been notified that tickets for the concert are selling fast and recommend early bookings.

Festival Maribor 2010

As in 2008 and 2009, Australian violinist Richard Tognetti will put together a varied program of classical and cross-over music and film. The Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) and leading international musicians will provide for an enjoyable musical experience.

12th Biennial Conference of the German Association for Australian Studies

The 12th Conference of the German Association for Australian Studies will be taking place in Klagenfurt, Carinthia, from 30 September to 2 October. Australian authors Richard Flanagan and Michael Rolls will be among the conference’s key speakers.
This year’s theme will be Australian culture related to imagery. For instance, which
conceptions and notions do Europeans associate with Australia? To what extent have ecological and political developments influenced stereotypes? etc.
